US driver's license guide

Can you convert a US driver's license in Thailand?

Usually, if a physical US state or D.C. licence remains valid through the authorised Thai stay and clearly shows the same car or motorcycle entitlement. Territory-issued cards need branch confirmation.

Your route

Three checks before you book.

  1. Valid foreign driving licence with a check.

    Bring the state card

Use the current physical licence, not only a digital card or renewal receipt.

  2. Motorcycle vehicle category.

    Read the endorsement

The state class must show the car or motorcycle entitlement you request.

  3. Theory-test status check.

    Confirm the shorter route

Accepted matching evidence is generally treated as having passed theory and driving.

US eligibility

The issuing state and vehicle class are the decision points

The US has no federal driver's license. State and D.C. cards differ in class labels; territory-issued cards should be confirmed with the receiving DLT office.

  • Use the full state or territory licence

The DLT checklist asks for the original licence and a copy.

Bring the current physical card and do not rely only on a wallet image or screenshot. If you have a government-issued temporary paper licence, renewal receipt, military extension, or an expired card with an extension document, ask the DLT office to confirm that it will treat the evidence as an unexpired original before booking.

  • Match the motorcycle licence, class, or endorsement

Labels vary: New York uses M/MJ, California M1/M2, and Florida can show a motorcycle endorsement or Motorcycle Only licence.

California M2 and some ordinary car classes cover only limited mopeds, scooters, or three-wheel vehicles. A passenger-car class cannot support a Thai motorcycle application, and limited privileges should not be assumed to map to an unrestricted Thai motorcycle licence.

  • English normally removes the translation trigger

The Thai regulation requires certified Thai or English evidence when a foreign licence has no English.

Most state-issued cards are in English. If a territory-issued card, or any part needed to establish category or validity, is not in English, use the rule's embassy- or consulate-certified Thai or English translation route. An unclear class or restriction can still require branch-requested verification.

US document stack

Bring the national DLT file before adding optional paperwork

The official Thai checklist does not publish a separate US-only document route. Start with the same five evidence groups used for other foreign licences.

  1. Passport.

  2. Residence document with a home and location pin.

    Address proof

  3. Medical certificate and stethoscope.

  • Passport and accepted Thai residence evidence

Bring the original passport, requested copies, and accepted Thai address evidence.

The published operational checklist asks for at least 15 days remaining on the Thai stay, and the state or territory licence should remain valid for the full authorised stay. Confirm near-expiry or temporary cards before booking.

  • Medical certificate inside the 30-day window

The national checklist gives the medical certificate a 30-day validity period from issue.

Clinic charges are separate from the DLT fee. If applying for car and motorcycle together, confirm whether the office wants a separate original for each application.

  • Physical US license, treaty IDP if used, and training result

Carry the original card, requested copies, and one-hour DLT training result.

A US IDP is the 1949 Geneva-format permit, valid for one year, and only AAA and AATA are authorised US issuers. It cannot create a motorcycle entitlement. For conversion it is not automatically required when the DLT accepts the English physical licence; for temporary driving, carry it with the domestic licence.

  • Do not buy an affidavit by default

The national DLT checklist does not require a separate US Embassy licence affidavit when the original and relevant details are in English.

Thai address evidence remains a separate requirement. If a branch asks for authentication, request the exact document name and format before booking notarial work; a generic affidavit or consular seal does not guarantee DLT acceptance.

US conversion process

Evidence review decides whether the shorter testing route applies

Published DLT testing rules generally treat the written and driving tests as passed when a valid same-type foreign government licence is accepted. Physical screening remains.

  1. 1

Confirm the appointment and submit the state card

Book or confirm a first Thai licence based on a foreign licence, then present the complete document stack.

Staff must be able to match your name, validity, state authority, and car or motorcycle entitlement before the conversion route can continue.

  2. 2

    Complete reaction and vision screening

Expect the physical-fitness stations used for licence applicants.

These checks are distinct from the computer theory test and practical driving test. Follow the office instructions and ask for clarification if an English explanation is unavailable.

  3. 3

Ask what failed if a full test is assigned

If staff direct you to theory or practical testing, ask whether the state class, motorcycle endorsement, validity, condition of the card, or another document was not accepted. Do not assume all American applicants automatically receive either an exemption or a full test.

  4. 4

Pay for each approved Thai category

After approval, DLT normally issues a 2-year temporary Thai licence.

Car and motorcycle remain separate categories. The registrar may still request more evidence, medical confirmation, or a driving retest after reviewing suitability, history, or the evidence.

US conversion costs

Separate the DLT tariff from verification and document costs

The government charge is fixed in the published checklist. Everything needed to prove identity, residence, health, and an unclear state category sits outside that fee.

  • Official DLT counter charge

The current checklist lists 205 baht for a private car licence and 105 baht for a motorcycle licence, including the application fee. Applying for both means two category charges and may require duplicate supporting originals.

  • Variable expenses

Budget separately for residence evidence, the clinic, copies, transport, and only the translation or authentication specifically requested for your evidence. There is no official all-in US conversion price and a private quote should never be described as the DLT fee.

  • Solve state-card ambiguity before spending

If the card uses an opaque class or endorsement code, bring an official printout from the issuing authority explaining that code.

It can help staff interpret the entitlement, but it does not replace the original card and does not guarantee Thai category mapping. Paying for an IDP, notarial appointment, or other paperwork cannot repair a missing or unsuitable vehicle entitlement.

Conversion FAQ

The questions to settle before you travel.

These answers follow the published national rules. The selected office still confirms your documents and vehicle category.

  • It normally produces a 2-year temporary Thai licence. After holding it for at least one year, an eligible holder can use the ordinary private-licence route; that later step is not automatic, and the regulation excludes some immigration statuses including tourism, sport, and transit admissions.
  • Usually, when a physical state or D.C. licence remains valid through the authorised Thai stay, covers the same vehicle type, and the DLT accepts the file. Thailand publishes no territory-by-territory list, so confirm a territory-issued card with the chosen office.
  • Most state-issued cards are in English, so the national non-English translation rule is normally not triggered. If a territory-issued card or relevant category or validity evidence is not in English, use the certified Thai or English translation route. Damaged, temporary, or unclear evidence can still require branch-requested verification.
  • It is not listed as a standard item when the original licence and relevant details are in English. Thai address evidence is separate. If an office asks for authentication, get the exact requested document and format before arranging notarial work; a generic affidavit does not guarantee acceptance.
  • No. The US evidence must show a corresponding motorcycle licence, class, or endorsement. An IDP cannot create it, and limited moped, scooter, or three-wheel privileges should not be assumed to map to an unrestricted Thai licence. For motorcycles of at least 35 kW or 400 cc, confirm the additional Thai training/testing-evidence rule with the DLT.
  • The published DLT counter fee is 205 baht for car or 105 baht for motorcycle. Residence evidence, medical, copies, transport, and any specifically requested verification are separate.

How we checked it

Official rules first. Branch details second.

US formats, class labels, restrictions, and motorcycle endorsements vary. Thailand publishes no territory-by-territory acceptance list, so confirm a territory card with the chosen DLT office. Ask for the exact name of any extra authentication it wants; this guide does not turn a branch request into a nationwide embassy-affidavit rule.

Confirm the branch, then prepare only if needed.

Use the full checklist for the national baseline and confirm the selected branch before travelling. Only prepare for theory if that office says it applies to your case.
