German licence guide

Can you convert a German driving licence in Thailand?

Usually. Use the valid original German licence document with the translation evidence accepted by the DLT, or a valid 1968 treaty IDP; bring the German original with either route.

Your route

Three checks before you book.

  1. Valid foreign driving licence with a check.

    Match the category

Car evidence supports car; motorcycle evidence supports motorcycle.

  2. Certified translated documents.

    Prepare the translation

German-only text needs accepted Thai or English certification.

  3. Physical reaction screening with lights and pedal.

    Take the screening

Physical checks remain even when the written and driving tests are waived.

Eligibility and translation

Match the category and translate the licence

Use the general foreign-licence route: the original must be valid, government-issued, and match the Thai vehicle category.

  • Match car to car and motorcycle to motorcycle

Category B supports the car application.

A, A1, or A2 is explicit motorcycle evidence, subject to DLT mapping. AM—including AM carried with B—is a restricted moped entitlement, and B196 is valid only in Germany; neither should be presented as a guaranteed Thai motorcycle conversion.

  • Choose the national-licence evidence route

The DLT checklist says a non-English licence needs an official Thai or English translation certified through the applicant's embassy or consulate.

German missions state that they neither prepare translations nor certify their accuracy. Before paying, ask the selected DLT office which German evidence and certification route it will accept.

  • Or use a valid 1968 treaty IDP as the evidence route

Thai application rules list a valid treaty IDP as a separate evidence route.

Use the German 1968 Vienna-format IDP and bring both originals: the Embassy says the 1926 format is no longer sufficient for driving and an IDP works only with the national licence. A German 1968 IDP lasts up to three years, never beyond the national licence. For stays longer than three months, the Embassy says a Thai licence is generally required.

Document checklist

Prepare originals, copies, and the German-language exception

The national checklist is short but document-led. A branch may reject the conversion route if it cannot verify identity, current Thai residence, licence validity, translation, or vehicle category.

  1. Passport.

    Passport

  2. Residence document with a home and location pin.

    Address proof

  3. Medical certificate and stethoscope.

  4. Valid foreign driving licence with a check.

    Home licence

  5. Completed online learning result.

  • Passport and Thai address evidence

Bring the original passport and requested copies plus accepted Thai address evidence.

The published operational checklist asks for at least 15 days remaining on the Thai stay, and the German licence should remain valid for the full authorised stay. Confirm near-expiry cases with the office.

  • Medical certificate

The DLT checklist calls for a medical certificate issued within 30 days.

Clinic pricing is not part of the licence fee. Time the visit close enough to the DLT appointment that the certificate remains inside its acceptance window.

  • Check German document validity before paying for translation

German exchange deadlines can invalidate the document even while the underlying entitlement continues.

As of August 2026, paper licences held by people born in 1953 or later are past their deadline; holders born before 1953 have until 19 January 2033. Cards issued in 1999–2001 were due on 19 January 2026, and cards issued in 2002–2004 are due by 19 January 2027. Replace an affected document before relying on it in Thailand.

Tests and process

Expect physical screening; confirm the written and practical exemption

In the published DLT testing table, a valid same-type foreign government licence is treated as having passed the written and driving tests, while physical-fitness screening still applies. The office must first accept the licence evidence.

  1. 1

    Complete the one-hour foreigner training

Use the official DLT e-learning service and keep the completion evidence.

The shorter training path is tied to accepted foreign-licence evidence; it is not a promise that every applicant avoids all further testing.

  2. 2

Submit the documents and take physical screening

Counter staff check the application before the normal colour, depth, peripheral-vision, and reaction screening. Exact station order and English-language assistance vary, so leave enough time and confirm the booked service.

  3. 3

Resolve any category or translation problem before testing

If staff cannot match the German entitlement to the Thai car or motorcycle class, or reject the translation, they may move the application to a standard new-licence route.

That route can include theory and practical tests. Ask for the missing evidence rather than assuming the same result at every branch.

  4. 4

Pay, take the photo, and receive the Thai card

Once accepted, DLT normally issues a 2-year temporary Thai licence.

The registrar may separately request more evidence, medical confirmation, or a driving retest after reviewing suitability, history, or the evidence. This is not a bilateral surrender-and-exchange scheme.

Cost and application office

Apply at a DLT office, after confirming its foreign-licence service

DLT's published checklist says applications can be made at a Land Transport Office. Use the official queue service or contact the selected office before travelling, especially if you need English assistance or want both car and motorcycle cards.

  • Official counter fee

The published DLT checklist lists 205 baht for a private car licence and 105 baht for a motorcycle licence, including the request fee. Those are counter fees, not an all-in budget.

  • Variable costs outside the DLT counter

Budget separately for the medical certificate, Certificate of Residence, certified translation or consular step, photocopies, photos if requested, and transport. Prices and processing times for those documents are not set by the DLT licence fee.

  • Confirm two applications if you need two categories

Car and motorcycle are separate Thai licence categories and may need separate document sets and fees. Ask whether the branch wants duplicate originals or medical certificates before attending for both.

Conversion FAQ

The questions to settle before you travel.

These answers follow the published national rules. The selected office still confirms your documents and vehicle category.

  • It normally produces a 2-year temporary Thai licence. After holding it for at least one year, an eligible holder can use the ordinary private-licence route; that later step is not automatic, and the regulation excludes some immigration statuses including tourism, sport, and transit admissions.
  • Usually, if the original German card or still-valid legacy paper licence covers the same vehicle type and the DLT accepts the identity, residence, medical, training, and language evidence. The German Embassy confirms that conversion can be applied for, but the Thai office decides the application.
  • A valid 1968 treaty IDP is a regulatory application-evidence route, but bring the German original too. For temporary driving, the Embassy explicitly requires both documents. It cannot issue a replacement German licence or IDP; those come from the responsible German licensing authority. An IDP does not create a motorcycle category.
  • The published DLT testing table generally treats written and driving tests as passed when a valid same-type foreign licence is accepted, while physical screening remains. A rejected category or translation can put the applicant into the standard route, so confirm with the branch.
  • No automatic motorcycle entitlement follows from a car-only licence. Show the corresponding motorcycle entitlement or expect the standard route. For a motorcycle of at least 35 kW or 400 cc, the 2020 Thai regulation also contains an additional training/testing-evidence rule; confirm its current implementation with the DLT.
  • The published DLT counter fee is 205 baht for car or 105 baht for motorcycle. Medical, residence, translation or certification, copying, and travel costs are separate and vary.

How we checked it

Official rules first. Branch details second.

Do not buy a translation or travel to an office based only on a forum checklist. Send or describe the German licence, its categories, and the proposed certification to the chosen DLT office first. English support, copy counts, appointment labels, and handling of an IDP can differ; the national rule does not guarantee a particular counter outcome.

Confirm the branch, then prepare only if needed.

Use the full checklist for the national baseline and confirm the selected branch before travelling. Only prepare for theory if that office says it applies to your case.
