Bangkok office guide

Convert a foreign driving licence in Bangkok.

Bangkok Areas 1–5 are official application channels. Choose by location and current service visibility, then confirm the foreign-licence appointment before travelling.

Your route

Three checks before you book.

  1. Residence document with a home and location pin.

    Solve address proof first

Residence evidence is the local dependency most likely to delay the file.

  2. Appointment calendar on a phone.

    Choose an Area Office

Use the official service to check Areas 1–5 instead of assuming one universal office.

  3. Physical reaction screening with lights and pedal.

    Confirm the branch route

Screening remains; test handling follows acceptance of your actual evidence.

Where to apply

Choose a Bangkok Area Office

Area Offices 1–5 handle temporary private-licence applications. Confirm the foreign-licence service and appointment before travelling.

Before you choose an office

Search the official appointment service

Use DLT's queue service to inspect offices and driver-licence appointments. On 20 August 2026, Areas 1–3 were selectable. Area 3 also exposed ‘Foreigner: NEW THAI DRIVING LICENCE’; Areas 1 and 2 did not show that service item, while Areas 4–5 were listed but disabled. This does not itself prove conversion eligibility or an available date.

Confirm the foreign-licence application before travelling

Ask whether the appointment category covers a first Thai licence based on a foreign licence, whether the office wants online training proof, and whether it needs paper copies. If calling is difficult, ask a Thai speaker to help rather than relying on a general English-support promise.

Choose for the actual journey, not an online reputation

Bangkok traffic can turn a short counter process into a long trip. The official service handbook says fee collection closes at 15:30; that is not a guaranteed latest check-in time. Choose an office you can reach earlier with the complete file. Old reviews do not establish current service rules.

Bangkok document stack

Residence evidence is the local step to solve first

The national checklist applies in Bangkok, but the residence document is obtained outside the DLT and can take longer than the clinic visit or copying. Confirm the accepted form before fixing the appointment date.

  1. Passport.

  2. Residence document with a home and location pin.

  5. Completed online learning result.

    E-learning

  • Passport and current Thai stay

Bring the original passport and copies of the identity and entry or extension evidence.

The published operational checklist asks for at least 15 days remaining, and the foreign licence should stay valid for the full authorised Thai stay. Confirm near-expiry cases before travelling.

  • Certificate of Residence or confirmed alternative

Bangkok Immigration publishes a residence-letter application specifically covering car or motorcycle driving licences.

A TM.30 receipt is supporting address input, not the finished letter. LTR holders can check the separate BOI/TIESC route at One Bangkok; its official page publishes a 15-day processing time, so plan it before the DLT appointment. Other applicants should confirm the accepted finished document with the Area Office.

  • Medical certificate, foreign licence, and translation if needed

The medical certificate must be inside the published 30-day window.

Bring the valid original foreign licence and copy. When the licence has no English, add Thai or English evidence certified as the regulation requires. Car and motorcycle categories must be separately visible.

  • One-hour DLT e-learning result

Complete the official foreigner module and keep both a digital and printable result.

Confirm whether the booked Bangkok office accepts online proof or has a specific counter workflow; do not substitute an unrelated driving-school certificate without approval.

Bangkok appointment flow

The national exemption still depends on the Bangkok office accepting the evidence

Published DLT rules generally waive written and driving tests for an accepted valid foreign licence covering the same type. Physical-fitness screening remains. Bangkok does not create a separate nationality rule, but branch execution can differ.

  1. 1

    Document review comes first

Staff compare identity, residence, medical, training, licence validity, language, and vehicle category. Missing or unclear evidence can stop the conversion before screening. Carry originals and the copy count the office confirmed.

  2. 2

    Take the physical screening

Expect the standard reaction and vision checks, which are separate from the written theory exam. Follow the local station order. English explanations may be available, but they are not guaranteed across Areas 1–5 or every shift.

  3. 3

Clarify any theory or practical instruction

If staff direct you to a theory or driving test, ask whether the foreign licence category, translation, validity, or another document was not accepted. A standard first-time application does include theory and practical stages; an accepted conversion normally follows the shorter published testing table.

  4. 4

Pay and collect the licence card

After approval, screening, fee payment, and the office photograph, DLT normally issues a 2-year temporary Thai licence.

The registrar can separately request further evidence, medical confirmation, or a driving retest. The handbook's 15:30 time is the fee-collection cut-off, not a guaranteed arrival time.

Bangkok costs

Separate the fixed DLT fee from the variable document budget

The licence counter charge is modest. The meaningful variation is usually outside the counter: residence evidence, clinic, translation or certification, copies, and transport across Bangkok.

  • DLT fee

The current official checklist lists 205 baht for a private car licence and 105 baht for a motorcycle licence, including the application fee. If you request both categories, plan for separate licences and confirm the document sets.

  • Document and travel costs

Clinic fees, residence-certificate charges or delivery, certified translation, consular work, photocopies, photographs if requested, parking, taxis, and repeat visits are separate. No honest Bangkok guide can give one universal all-in total.

  • Keep optional support separate from DLT fees

Translation, certification, and Thai-language assistance are separate from the DLT fee and do not change the legal evidence required. Confirm the official service and document stack before paying for any optional support.

Conversion FAQ

The questions to settle before you travel.

These answers follow the published national rules. The selected office still confirms your documents and vehicle category.

  • It normally produces a 2-year temporary Thai licence. After holding it for at least one year, an eligible holder can use the ordinary private-licence route; that later step is not automatic, and the regulation excludes some immigration statuses including tourism, sport, and transit admissions.
  • The official temporary-licence service handbook lists Bangkok Land Transport Area Offices 1–5. Use the official appointment service and confirm that the chosen office handles the foreign-licence application on your date; do not assume one area is always the foreigner office.
  • The DLT checklist asks for residence evidence and points to a Certificate of Residence from local immigration. The regulation names some alternatives, but the selected Area Office should confirm what it accepts for your status before you book.
  • Published DLT rules generally waive written and driving tests for an accepted valid same-type foreign licence, while physical screening remains. The office can require the standard route if the licence category, validity, translation, or other evidence is not accepted.
  • Possibly, but they are separate Thai categories with separate fees and potentially duplicate document requirements. Confirm the appointment service and exact number of originals or certificates with the selected Area Office first.
  • The published DLT counter fee is 205 baht for car or 105 baht for motorcycle. Residence evidence, medical, translation or certification, copies, and travel are separate and can cost more than the licence itself.

How we checked it

Official rules first. Branch details second.

Bangkok has several valid application offices, not one universal foreigner counter. Verify the office name, appointment type, address-document format, copy count, language support, and payment timing shown for your booking. The national licence and test rules are the baseline; an Area Office may still need to resolve your individual documents before applying them.

Confirm the branch, then prepare only if needed.

Use the full checklist for the national baseline and confirm the selected branch before travelling. Only prepare for theory if that office says it applies to your case.
