Australian licence guide

Can you convert an Australian driving licence in Thailand?

Usually, if the current physical state or territory licence matches the Thai car or motorcycle category. Address evidence must come from a source the DLT accepts.

Your route

Three checks before you book.

  1. Valid foreign driving licence with a check.

    Bring the photo card

State and territory licences need the physical card and a readable class.

  2. Residence document with a home and location pin.

    Use Thai address proof

The Australian Embassy cannot issue the Thai address-verification letter.

  3. Physical reaction screening with lights and pedal.

    Take the screening

Physical checks remain even when written and driving tests are waived.

Australian eligibility

Use the physical state card and match its vehicle class

Australian light-vehicle licensing is managed by states and territories, not one federal licence authority. The DLT must be able to see a current class corresponding to the Thai application.

  • Bring the physical state or territory licence

The Australian Department of Infrastructure confirms that states and territories regulate light-vehicle licensing.

Bring the current photo card rather than relying on a digital licence, interim receipt, screenshot, or an expired card. Overseas acceptance of digital credentials is not guaranteed.

  • Keep car and motorcycle classes separate

Australia's National Driver Licensing Scheme uses C for car and R for motorcycle, while restrictions differ by jurisdiction: Queensland uses RE/R, Western Australia R-E/R, and South Australia R-DATE/R.

Thailand publishes no one-to-one mapping for LAMS, automatic, provisional, novice, or restricted classes, so do not assume a restricted entitlement becomes unrestricted.

  • English normally avoids certified translation

The Thai regulation triggers certified Thai or English evidence when the foreign licence has no English.

Standard Australian cards are in English, so translation is normally not required by that rule. The office can still ask for clarification when a class code, restriction, or temporary document is unclear.

Australian document stack

Plan the Thai residence certificate without an embassy address letter

The key Australian-specific difference is address evidence: the Australian Embassy in Thailand says it cannot provide a letter, statement, certificate, or witnessed declaration verifying a Thai address.

  • Use Thai Immigration or another DLT-confirmed source

The Embassy directs Australians who need address evidence toward Thai Immigration for a Certificate of Residence.

Obtain the finished document required for the DLT process and confirm timing locally. Do not book an embassy statutory-declaration appointment expecting it to produce the unavailable address letter.

  • Passport and current stay copies

Bring the original passport and requested identity, entry, and extension copies.

The published operational checklist asks for at least 15 days remaining, and the Australian licence should remain valid for the full authorised Thai stay. Confirm near-expiry cards before arranging the residence certificate.

  • Medical certificate within 30 days

The published checklist gives the health certificate a 30-day validity period from issue.

Time the clinic visit around the confirmed DLT appointment. Ask whether separate originals are needed when applying for both car and motorcycle licences.

  • Original card, copies, IDP if useful, and training result

Carry the physical Australian licence, requested copies, and one-hour DLT training result.

A valid 1949 treaty IDP is a separate regulatory application-evidence route, but it cannot enlarge the Australian class. For temporary driving, carry the IDP together with the domestic card.

Australian conversion process

The shorter route begins only after the DLT accepts the class

Published Thai testing rules generally treat written and driving tests as passed for an accepted valid same-type foreign licence. Physical screening still applies and the actual state class must be clear.

  1. 1

    Confirm the foreign-licence appointment

Ask for a first Thai licence based on a valid Australian licence, not simply a generic new-licence test slot. Confirm the office, paper-copy count, and whether car and motorcycle applications can be processed together before travelling.

  2. 2

Submit the physical card and complete screening

Staff review identity, residence, medical, training, licence validity, and vehicle class before the reaction and vision checks. Physical screening is not the theory exam or practical course and remains part of the published conversion path.

  3. 3

Clarify any theory or practical instruction

If staff assign a full test, ask whether the class, restriction, card format, residence evidence, or another document was not accepted. An Australian car class does not shorten the process for a Thai motorcycle licence when no motorcycle entitlement exists.

  4. 4

Pay and collect each approved category

After approval, DLT normally issues a 2-year temporary Thai licence.

Car and motorcycle remain separate categories. The registrar may still request more evidence, medical confirmation, or a driving retest after reviewing suitability, history, or the evidence.

Australian conversion costs

The address-certificate route matters more than the counter fee

Keep the published DLT tariff separate from the local costs of assembling an accepted file. The Embassy does not sell or issue the missing Thai address certificate.

  • Official DLT counter charge

The current checklist lists 205 baht for a private car licence and 105 baht for a motorcycle licence, including the application fee. Two applications mean two category fees and can require duplicate supporting originals.

  • Variable document costs

Budget separately for Thai residence evidence, the medical certificate, copies, transport, and only the verification an office specifically requests. Standard English normally avoids translation, but no official source promises one universal all-in price.

  • Avoid paying for the wrong address service

The Australian Embassy explicitly says it cannot provide or witness the Thai address-verification document. Confirm the local Immigration procedure and the DLT office's accepted format before spending money or fixing a licence appointment date.

Conversion FAQ

The questions to settle before you travel.

These answers follow the published national rules. The selected office still confirms your documents and vehicle category.

  • It normally produces a 2-year temporary Thai licence. After holding it for at least one year, an eligible holder can use the ordinary private-licence route; that later step is not automatic, and the regulation excludes some immigration statuses including tourism, sport, and transit admissions.
  • Usually, when the current physical state or territory licence covers the same vehicle type and the DLT accepts the complete file. The office confirms the class and documents.
  • Standard Australian cards are in English, so the national non-English translation rule is normally not triggered. An unclear class, restriction, temporary document, or damaged card may still need office-requested verification.
  • No. The Embassy says it cannot witness a statutory declaration or issue a letter, statement, or certificate verifying an address in Thailand. It suggests contacting Thai Immigration for a Certificate of Residence.
  • No. A corresponding Australian motorcycle entitlement must be visible, and an IDP cannot create one. Restricted RE, R-E, or R-DATE evidence should not be assumed to become unrestricted. For motorcycles of at least 35 kW or 400 cc, confirm the additional Thai training/testing-evidence rule with the DLT.
  • Do not rely on it alone. The DLT checklist asks for the original foreign licence, and overseas recognition of Australian digital credentials is not guaranteed. Bring the current physical photo card. If you only have a digital credential or interim document, get the selected office to confirm it before booking.
  • The published DLT counter fee is 205 baht for car or 105 baht for motorcycle. Residence evidence, medical, copies, travel, and any specifically requested verification are separate.

How we checked it

Official rules first. Branch details second.

Australian states and territories use different class and restriction labels, and Thai offices can differ in how they want supporting copies. The Australian Embassy's address-letter limitation is national, but the Immigration certificate process and DLT acceptance should still be confirmed locally. Bring the physical card and never assume a digital licence or IDP replaces it.

Confirm the branch, then prepare only if needed.

Use the full checklist for the national baseline and confirm the selected branch before travelling. Only prepare for theory if that office says it applies to your case.
